2014 PhD Studentship in Energy Engineering at Cardiff University in UK

Cardiff University is inviting applications for a PhD studentship in energy engineering. This studentship is open to UK nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements. This PhD will last for 3.5 years and is only available to students wishing to study full time. Studentship consists of full UK/EU tuition fees, as well as a doctoral stipend of £16,726, updated each year. The application deadline is 14th June 2014.
About Scholarship: The transmission network in the UK is being stretched due to an increasing demand for power transmission combined with the difficulty in consenting new lines. Series compensation of transmission lines is a widely-used method to improve the effective capacity of the transmission system, thus avoiding the need to build new lines in many parts of the network. However, series compensation of lines creates the risk of torsional oscillations between the electrical network and generators. These oscillations are referred to as sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) since they typically occur at sub-synchronous frequencies (<50 Hz). SSR, if left unattended, has been known to cause serious damage to generators.
Study: Studentship is awarded in the field of Energy Engineering. Project title: Damping of Sub-synchronous Resonance.
Course Level: Studentship is available for pursuing PhD research program at Cardiff University in UK.
Scholarship Provider: Siemens PLC
Scholarship can be taken at: UK
Accreditation: Cardiff University is an accredited university. Cardiff University is accredited by the Russell Group and EUA Universities UK.

Eligibility:
-Residency: Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements. To be eligible for the full award, EU Nationals must have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the course for which they are seeking funding, including for the purposes of full-time education. EU Nationals who do not meet the above residency requirement are eligible for a fees only award, provided that they have been ordinarily resident in the EU for at least 3 years prior to the start of their proposed programme of study.
-Academic criteria: Candidates should hold or expect to gain a first class degree or a good 2.1 and/or an appropriate Master’s level qualification (or their equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent).

Scholarship Open for: UK/EU students can apply for this PhD studentship.
Number of award: A PhD studentship will be available.
