Traineeship: editorial assistant at the international review of the Red Cross

Produced by the ICRC and published by Cambridge University Press, the International Review of the Red Cross is a specialized journal dedicated to international humanitarian law, humanitarian action and policy. It is published quarterly and its principal audience includes governments, international governmental and non-governmental organisations, universities, the media and all those interested in humanitarian issues at large.
The Review forms a small unit of 3 people within the FORUM Unit in the Integration & Promotion of the Law Division of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC): the Editor-in-Chief, the Editor, and the Editorial Assistant (one-year trainee). In addition, 2-3 short-term trainees join the team throughout the year for periods of 2-3 months.

Description

The Editorial Assistant works closely with the Editor-in-Chief and the Editor in the identification of future themes, assessment of articles, and overall content management. The staff of the Review is in regular interaction with ICRC's Legal Division, as well as other divisions and departments, in particular ICRC’s Protection Division, Operations Department, and Policy Unit.
The trainee will assist the Editor and the Editor-in-Chief of the Review in the conceptualization of the themes, contacts with authors, background research and substantive evaluation of articles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assistance to the Editor-in-Chief and the Editor of the International Review of the Red Cross
  • Substantial academic research on upcoming themes
  • Identification of potential authors and solicitation of submissions for the Review
  • Legal editing of article submissions (checking the legal reasoning, arguments, structure and sources)
  • Preparation and co-conduct of interviews of key experts in the field of humanitarian law, policy and action for the Review
  • Correspondence with authors and partners, and management of the Review files
  • Occasional involvement in the organisation of launch events of the journal, or online webinars featuring themes of the Review 
  • Maintenance of the webpage of the Review in English and French;

Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in law, with a specialisation in IHL and human rights
  • Excellent command of English with good French reading abilities
  • Initiative and capacity to work independently under minimal supervision
  • Excellent ability to work in a team
  • Excellent communication skills including strong writing abilities
  • Excellent organizational skills
Length of assignment: one year
