Social media fellowship

THE ECONOMIST'S reporting, insight and analysis reach 35m people through social media. More people than ever discover us for the first time on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram—and it is the job of the social media department to tailor our journalism to these platforms. We are seeking two talented, creative and enthusiastic writers to join our team in our editorial offices in London. We want candidates with a genuine interest in social media storytelling and the ability to adapt our sharp analysis to a range of platforms.
You are a suitable candidate if you are fostering healthy debate between our followers and editors. You use Snapchat, WhatsApp and maybe even WeChat. You know what “swapping faces” means. You have an opinion on which publisher is making the best use of Facebook Live. You follow us on Instagram and have ideas for how we can improve our presence on it. You can distill a nuanced piece of analysis from our newspaper into a social-friendly headline. You understand that social media isn’t just a distribution channel but an integral part of reaching and building audiences. You want to help integrate social media into the lives of our world-class correspondents and editors.
Apply with your CV, cover letter, a 400-word explainer, in the style of our explainer blog, on a topic of your choice as well as a 200-word piece describing how you would promote it on social media to edsocialjob@economist.com. Successful candidates will join initially for three months with the possibility of an extension. The pay is £2,000 per month. The deadline for applications is July 31st. Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK and available to start in September.
Preferred attributes
Interest in or experience of creating social-friendly journalism
Knowledge of our target audience
Awareness of what other publishers are doing on social media and enthusiasm for trying new things
Experience writing articles and effectively promoting them on social media
The Economist Group values diversity. We are committed to equal opportunities and creating an inclusive environment for all our employees. We welcome applicants regardless of ethnic origin, national origin, gender, race, colour, religious beliefs, disability, sexual orientation or age.
