Junior Fellows Internship at United Nations University

The United Nations University Office of the Rector recruits highly qualified applicants to work as Junior Fellows at the UNU headquarters in Tokyo. Junior Fellows are recruited through a competitive application process twice per year. Graduate students interested in the work of the United Nations — and in particular, UNU — are encouraged to apply.
The underlying principles of the Junior Fellows Internship Programme at the Office of the Rector are centred on creating a dynamic, challenging and rewarding experience for graduate level students and young professionals. Successful candidates will contribute to the work of the Office of the Rector, the United Nations University, and the UN system as a whole. The programme provides opportunities for the development of new skills and knowledge and is a unique and constructive setting for the practical application of capacities acquired through graduate studies.
The programme places a strong emphasis on the training, guidance, and hands-on experience that form the foundation of a successful and beneficial internship. The programme opens with a one-week orientation designed to familiarize junior fellows with UNU, their co-workers, facilities and the working processes within the Office of the Rector. The knowledge and practical experience gained will also be beneficial to those candidates seeking a career in the United Nations. Junior fellows at the Office of the Rector can expect to gain valuable work experience while contributing in meaningful ways to UNU’s mission.
PURPOSE
The purpose of the Junior Fellows Internship Programme at the Office of the Rector is:
to promote interaction and dialogue between young scholars, professionals and UNU;
to familiarize junior fellows with the activities of the Office of the Rector and the work of UNU;
to provide opportunities for young professionals to gain in-depth, hands-on experience in a UN agency;
to expose young professionals to an administrative working environment, and;
to provide support to activities within the Office of the Rector.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Running parallel to most university semesters, Junior Fellows are selected twice per year, once in May-June for the fall term and once in September-October for the spring term. The fall term begins in mid-August and lasts until mid-December. Starting 2016, the spring term will run from mid-January to the end of June. Junior Fellows work full time during the regular working hours of the University: 9:30–17:30, Monday to Friday. Weekends and official UNU holidays are days off. In addition, Junior Fellows are entitled to 1 day of leave per month. Junior Fellows are provided office space and facilities, as appropriate for their work, and are provided a monthly stipend in addition to a fixed transportation allowance for their commute to and from the UNU headquarters building. Junior Fellows also enjoy free access to the headquarters’ library and gym and have the unique opportunity to learn about, contribute to and provide assistance in the organization of conferences, lectures and academic forums and symposiums that take place throughout the year.
WORK ASSIGNMENTS
Participants in this programme have the opportunity to engage in a number of ongoing initiatives that provide a unique window into the working processes of the University. Junior Fellows support the work of the Office of the Rector in the following areas:
research and writing for institutional development: preparation of executive briefs on priority issues; background research and drafting of topical information briefs in support of internal policy development (i.e. related to the functioning of the University);
planning: supporting the development of project management tools and systems;
event coordination: supporting the organization of lectures, conferences, workshops, and other public events;
meeting coordination: logistical support and minute taking;
editorial support: proof-reading reports and copy editing;
communication: preparation and dissemination of newsletters, event summaries, and other communication documents.
CRITERIA
The qualifications that are considered in each application process include, but are not limited to, the following. The candidate:
is currently pursuing or has recently completed postgraduate studies (master’s or doctoral), preferably in a field related to the University’s work;
is under 32 years of age at the time of application;
must not have more than 5 years of work experience in their related field;
has a native or near fluent command of written and spoken English;
has excellent research, writing and analytical skills;
can establish and maintain effective working relations with people from diverse backgrounds;
demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity in problem-solving;
has advanced computer skills: sound, hands-on, knowledge of standard office software (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, etc.); and
has a demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and more specifically, in the work of the United Nations University.

The Swedish Research Council is now accepting applications for International Postdoc Grant for January 2018 start.  The purpose of the grant is to give recently qualified researchers with a doctoral degree from a Swedish university the opportunity to expand their networks and their competencies by working abroad under secure employment terms.
The Swedish Research Council priority target groups are researchers since financing research is one of the most important missions of the Swedish Research Council. Other target groups are decision-makers, journalists, and the public. Grant is awarded in the following fields:

Eligibility
The following criteria must be fulfilled in order for you to be eligible to apply for the grant:
The applicant for an international postdoc grant must be an individual researcher;

You are, however, expected to remain employed full-time throughout the grant period, which means that you are employed and pay tax in Sweden during your stay abroad. Benefits
The grant is awarded in a standard amount of 110114.83 EUR per year.
Out of which 94384.14 EUR is for your salary costs and 15730.69 EUR for research expenses relating to your stay and the research you will be carrying out (such as consumables, travel including stays at research sites and publication costs);
The grant amount includes the cover of indirect costs. The standard amount relating to salary costs also includes social security contributions. The grant may not be used for bursaries.
The Swedish Research Council assumes that the administrating organisation, as the employer responsible, will cover any costs in excess of the standard amount received.
The grant period is 18-36 months, starting from 1 January 2018. The first payment will be made during January 2018 at the earliest.

Internship

Ipsos MORI is recruiting an intern for our Public Affairs team, who specialise in social research. The duration of the internship will be approximately 3 months and will end on the 22nd December 2017. The intern will be assigned a line manager and buddy to guide them through the internship.
Applicants must have a keen interest in social research and will have recently finished a degree, ideally within the last year. Please note that there is no guarantee of a job at the end of the internship. All applicants must have the right to work in the UK and will be paid the London Living Wage.

UNESCO/Czech Republic Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme, 2018-2019

UNESCO and Czech Republic are inviting applications for fellowships programme. There is no possibility to change neither the field of study nor the study programme once the fellowship is awarded.
In order to promote human resource capacities in the developing Member States and to enhance friendship among peoples of the world, the Government of the Czech Republic has placed at the disposal of UNESCO three long-term fellowships for undergraduate studies (which comprises the Bachelor’s and Master’s study programmes for the academic year 2017-2018) for the benefit of certain developing Member States.

The Lundbeck Foundation is inviting applications for Lundbeckfonden Ph.D. Scholarships to study in Denmark. International applicants are eligible to apply for this scholarship program.
The aim of the foundation’s grants is to make a significant contribution towards increasing the quality and the usability of all research-based knowledge and experience gained in the field of biomedical and health sciences in Denmark.
The Lundbeck Foundation is one of Denmark’s largest commercial foundations, worth over DKK 60 billion, and we award research grants of around DKK 500 million each year to Danish-based, biomedical sciences research – primarily in the field of brain research.

Czech Republic Government Scholarships for Developing Countries, 2018

Applications are invited for Czech Government Scholarships available for foreign nationals from developing countries to pursue Bachelor/ Master/ Doctoral degree program at public universities in the Czech Republic. The application deadline is September 30.
The Government of the Czech Republic offers scholarships within the framework of its Foreign Development Assistance in support of the study of foreign nationals.
The scholarships are intended solely to promote the studies of adults who are foreign nationals from developing third countries in need.
A limited number of scholarships are also offered to applicants from selected developing countries through UNESCO.
Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing Bachelor/ Master/ Doctoral studies/Language and preparatory studies at public universities in the Czech Republic.
Study Subject(s): Scholarships are awarded in the field of Economics, Agriculture, Informatics, Environment, and Energetics at public universities in the Czech Republic.
Scholarship Award: The scholarship covers the necessary costs related to staying and studying in the CR. The scholarship amount is regularly amended. Currently, the amount paid to students on a Bachelor’s, Master’s or follow-up Master’s study programme stands at CZK 14,000 per month, whereas the amount paid to students of a Doctoral study programme stands at CZK 15,000 per month. The above scholarship amount includes an amount designated for the payment of accommodation costs.Costs of accommodation, food, and public transport are covered by scholarship holders from the scholarship under the same conditions that apply to students who are citizens of the CR. Should healthcare exceeding standard care be required by the student, s/he shall cover it at his/her own cost. Travel expenses for traveling to the Czech Republic and back to the student’s home country are paid by the party that nominated the student to study in the CR or by the foreign national at his/her own cost.

Neither a citizen of the Czech Republic, nor a citizen of a member state of the European Union, nor any other foreign national with a permit to permanent residence on the territory of the Czech Republic may, therefore, be granted this type of scholarship. Furthermore, the scholarships may not be granted to persons under 18 years of age. (The applicants have to turn 18 as of 1 September of the year when they commence studies in the Czech Republic at the latest.)
In Bachelor/ Master/ Doctoral Study Programmes plus one-year Preparatory Course of the English language (Which is combined with other field-specific training): Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates from upper secondary schools, or Bachelor’s / Master’s degree courses, as applicable, Who can Enroll only in Study Programmes in which instruction is given in the English language. Depending on the subject area, Applicants are normally required to sit entrance Examinations at the higher education institution Concerned. Successful passing of Entrance examination constitutes a precondition for the scholarship award; or
In follow-up study Programmes Master or Doctoral Study Programmes: Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates of Bachelor or Master Study Programmes, respectively, Enroll in the WHO study Programmes with instruction in the English language.
Nationality: Czech Government Scholarships are available for foreign nationals from developing countries. A limited number of scholarships are also offered to applicants from selected developing countries through UNESCO.

WORK EXPERIENCE WITH WELTHUNGERHILFE'S PROJECTS ABROAD

An internship with one of our overseas projects offers you the opportunity to gain up to six months' practical experience in development cooperation and find out what working in the field on a daily basis in another country is really like.

During your placement you will be provided with extensive support and assigned a mentor but when we award internships in foreign countries, we also ensure that our interns are able to make a useful contribution to the work going on there and that they organize their stay in the country themselves to a large extent.

Framework conditions
Our internships last for a maximum of six months. You don't need to worry about finding accommodation in the project country, as this will be provided for you by Welthungerhilfe. In addition, we pay a monthly allowance of 200 euros.
You are responsible for procuring a visa for the country you would like to work in, although we will of course help you with this and supply you with any documents you require, such as an internship contract. Welthungerhilfe will reimburse you for the cost of the visa.
As an intern you are essentially responsible for organizing your stay yourself and will bear any expenses connected with this. The main costs will be your flights and, because we don't offer group policies for interns, international health insurance including emergency assistance, as well as accident insurance.

The projects / countries
It is possible to apply for an internship in any project countries, that are generally classified as stable.
The following project countries are marked as high risk countries and can therefore not be applied for: Afghanistan, Burundi, Central African Republic, DR Congo, Iraq, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Pakistan, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Turkey.

Please note that unfortunately, information is not available for publication on every project / country. You can be sure, however, that all offices mentioned on our website are currently implementing projects, even if in some cases the corresponding project descriptions are not published.
You should be aware that internships abroad are meant to provide a general overview of the work in development cooperation. Even if in a certain country a project is implemented which is of particular interest to you, it cannot be guaranteed that you will be mainly working on that project in your internship. Considering that the internship is limited to a relatively short period of a maximum of 6 months, it may very well occur that during the course of your internship you do not get any access to that project at all, e.g. due to traveling restrictions for political or climatic reasons or because the project has reached its final phase. You should therefore choose a country that you are generally interested in and describe your particular areas of interest in your letter of motivation.
In any case, you can gather very interesting experience in any of our projects. In principle, the projects are related to the following issues, while the focus may vary from case to case:

The possibility of an internship in one of our offices always depends on the current workload in the offices and the qualifications and expectations of the applicant. Normally, we do not have specific descriptions and/or timeframes/deadlines for the internships (if not separately mentioned).
Please use the information on our website to gather information about the projects in the different countries to see if the projects there fit your expectations. More detailed information going beyond what is described on the Welthungerhilfe website can only be provided once a particular office wishes to offer you an intern position.
Please do not contact the offices abroad directly!
It is not possible to apply generally according to areas of interest or for all offices/countries. Therefore, please limit your application to only one office/country per application e-mail. If you would like to apply for more than one office/country, please send a complete set of application documents for each office/country.
You can send as many applications as you want and of course you can apply again at a later date.
For organizational reasons, you should apply about 3 to 6 months before the intended period of your internship. Of course, you may also apply at a sooner or a later stage.
Even if shorter periods are generally possible, it is advisable that the internship lasts at least 2 months.
Applicants are not subject to any restriction of age, nationality, language skills in German or level of academic qualification! Anyone may apply who would like to gain a comprehensive insight into the professional field of development cooperation.
In line with the desire to afford a broad insight, we consider it to be particularly important that the internship takes place in a country other than the intern’s country of origin. This is essential to learn about the challenges of working in an international environment.
Feedback on your application
The office will contact you directly within four weeks after the receipt of your application should they be interested and able to offer you an internship.
If you haven’t heard from the office within four weeks, we are unfortunately not able to offer you an internship in your desired location. Because of the large number of applications we don’t have the capacities to send a separate letter of refusal.
